The first inhabitants of Salt Spring Island homes were the Coast Salish people.
They did not carve totem poles they did carve welcoming figures which where up to twenty feet high. Coast Salish women made find baskets and blankest made from the wool of small white dogs. It is not known if any ancestors of these dogs have survived. Once the Hudson's bay started selling blanket their dogs where not needed any more. How sad. It is a good think my best friend Rex dos not know this story. Have you seen Rex's new web site. We may try and find out a bit more about these dogs and put the information about them on Rex's site. http://www.buygulfislands.com/
Cheers
