Just picked up some lumber at the free Salt Spring building store!

It cost about $200 per sq ft to build a Salt Spring Island home but if you shop right and do some of the work yourself you can really save. Free wood all you have to do is pick it up and carry off the beach. Now I know that there are probably 25 government agencies you have to go through to do this legally but for the odd piece of decorative lumber it is a fun way to shop. I just needed two 6x6 15 ft long and did not want pressure treated none artistic looking wood so I ventured down to the local beach with my hand truck and a price of rope and walla. Actually half a walla I only found one and need to go back for a second trip. Just taking a quick break to tell you about this.

The moral of the story is if you are willing to do some of your own work and be a little creative and recycle. It is amazing at how you can cut that $200 per sq ft Salt Spring building cost down to the $50-$70 range.

Cheers
Scott
