Salt Spring Island BC real estate living cost comparison on electric rates. BC Hydro our provincial electric supplier has the lowest price per kwh in North America. British Columbia is a mountainous province that has an abundance of rivers and dams which provide hydro electricity. It was one of the building block strategies of the province to supply cheep electricity in the hopes of boosting industrial capacity. Now it is political suicide to boost electric rates. They are so low that the province need everyone to cut back on consumption or build a new dam. Site C as the new dam site is known is not an easy sell to the people who live up there and will have their valley flooded. Who could blame them. 

That is the future in BC to keep the rates low and customers will not cut consumption (they will have to build the new dam) or raise rates to slow consumption. I suspect we will get a new dam in the next ten years.

On a direct comparison a house in Edmonton will pay about 3 times as much for electricity when all the extra charges are on the bill.
