Salt Spring island real estate tip "it pays to be able to fix the odd thing". One small disadvantage to living on Salt Spring is that on a small island there is not a lot of choices when something breaks.

This last week my fridge went on the fritz. With a Google here and there I found a great site appliance 411 and found out what was wrong with it. The site said it was the cooling fan (apparently it is a common problem with subzero) and gave me a pdf file with all the parts. So now I had the part number and just called a place in Victoria, Totem Appliance and the guy said "I have the part and will ship it out this afternoon". 8am the ace courier truck ($14.51 Shipping charge) was here with the fan motor ($83.00) and 15 minutes later the fridge is running like new.

The combination of the Internet and Victoria parts stores made this repair easy and fast. There is a repairman on the island but I just thought I would save a little and do it myself.

There is also satisfaction about doing the job myself. Maybe you just become more self reliant when you move to an island.
